W-8BEN for a freelancer billing US clients.

A US client that pays a foreign freelancer directly will usually ask for a W-8BEN, the form the IRS publishes for that purpose. This page says what the form documents, who asks for it, and what the pack's walkthrough produces. It does not tell you how to answer any specific line on your own return.

What the form documents

A W-8BEN tells a US client's finance team that you are not a US taxpayer, so the client can keep a record on file for its own reporting. It is the client's paperwork as much as yours; without it, a client's system may hold a payment while it waits for one.

Who asks for it

The request usually comes from the client's finance or accounts-payable team, not from a tax authority in either country. A completed W-8BEN and a written scope from the services agreement are what most US clients ask a new foreign contractor for before the first payment goes out.

What the walkthrough does and does not do

The walkthrough steps through the form field by field, using the profile you already entered for the invoice and the agreement. It does not decide how a specific line applies to your situation; where a question turns on your own tax position, the walkthrough points you to a professional in the Philippines rather than answering it.

What the pack produces for this

A completed W-8BEN walkthrough from your profile, alongside the USD invoice, the services agreement, the payment-reminder sequence, and the monthly earnings summary for your own local tax. The same form, filled the same way, for every US client you take on.

Questions

Do I need a new W-8BEN for every client?
Each US client that pays you directly will generally want its own copy on file; the walkthrough produces one per client from the same profile.
Does the pack file the form with the IRS?
No. The walkthrough produces the completed form for you to give to the client; nothing here is filed on your behalf.
Which tax treatment applies to my US income?
I can explain what the pack covers and where to find it, but I cannot tell you how a rule applies to your situation; a licensed accountant in the Philippines can.

Confirm tax treatment with a professional in the Philippines.
